About This product

The carburetor is a device used in spark-ignition engines (mostly older cars, and still common in small engines like lawnmowers and chainsaws) to supply the engine with a combustible mixture of fuel and air.

It operates on Bernoulli's principle, where the faster flow of air through a narrowed section (the venturi) creates a localized drop in pressure (a vacuum), which then draws liquid fuel into the air stream.

Major Carburetor Components and Their Functions

The carburetor assembly consists of several main parts that work together to ensure the correct air-to-fuel ratio is delivered to the engine under different operating conditions:

  • Float Chamber (or Fuel Bowl): This stores a small reserve of liquid fuel. A float and needle valve system inside the chamber automatically regulates the fuel level, ensuring a constant supply pressure.
  • Venturi: This is the constricted part of the air passage. As air rushes through it, its speed increases and static pressure drops, creating the vacuum necessary to draw in fuel.
  • Throttle Valve: Often a butterfly valve, this adjustable plate is located downstream of the venturi. It controls the overall amount of air (and thus the fuel/air mixture) entering the engine cylinders, thereby regulating the engine's speed and power output.
  • Jets: These are precisely sized orifices that meter the fuel flow:
    • Main Jet: Supplies fuel during normal running conditions (mid to high throttle).
    • Idle Jet (or Slow Jet): Supplies a small, regulated amount of fuel when the engine is idling or running at low speed, where the venturi effect is insufficient.
  • Choke: Usually a butterfly valve located upstream of the venturi, its primary function is to restrict the air intake when the engine is cold. This allows a fuel-rich charge (more fuel for the amount of air) to be drawn in, making the cold engine easier to start.
