Function  

• When you pull the brake lever, hydraulic pressure pushes the disc pads against the rotating brake disc.  

• The friction between the pad surface and the disc slows the wheel down.  

• The pads convert kinetic energy into heat, which is then dissipated into the air. 

Main Parts of a Disc Pad 

1. Friction Material – The outer layer that contacts the disc (made from organic, semi-metallic, or ceramic materials). 
2. Backing Plate – A steel plate that supports the friction material. 
3. Shim or Insulator – A thin layer that reduces noise and vibration.
